Wet Sintered Diamond Core Drill Bits: Applications and Recommended Drilling Methods

Drilling porcelain tile, ceramic tile, sintered stone and marble requires a tool that can remove hard, brittle material without relying on impact force. A wet sintered diamond core drill bit is designed for this type of application.

The ZHUOSHI thin-wall wet sintered diamond core drill bit features a 0.95 mm cutting rim and a straight shank. It is intended for use with a hand drill or suitable drilling machine under continuous water cooling. It is not an M14 angle-grinder drill bit and must not be used in hammer or percussion mode.

What Is a Wet Sintered Diamond Core Drill Bit?

A diamond core drill bit removes a circular ring of material and leaves a core plug inside the bit. This drilling method requires less material removal than drilling out the entire hole.

The diamond cutting rim grinds through the hard surface rather than cutting it with conventional teeth. The one-step sintered rim is intended for repeat wet drilling, while continuous water cooling controls heat and helps carry abrasive slurry away from the drilling area.

  • Sintered stone and large-format porcelain slabs

  • Marble tiles and panels

Material composition, surface hardness and thickness can vary. Carry out a drilling test before processing valuable finished panels or starting a large production batch.

Porcelain and Sintered Slab Fabrication

The 0.95 mm thin-wall design produces a narrow drilling path and removes less material. Because the cutting rim is thin, the operator must keep the drill correctly aligned and avoid side loading.

Compatible Drilling Equipment

The straight shank is designed for compatible corded or cordless hand drills and stationary drilling machines. Check that the drill chuck securely holds the shank before starting.

This product is not suitable for:

  • Angle grinders or M14 grinder connections

  • Hammer drills operating in hammer mode

  • Rotary hammers operating in percussion mode

  • Dry drilling without water

Preparing to Drill

1. Confirm the Material and Substrate

Identify the surface material, its thickness and the substrate behind it. A bit intended for porcelain or marble may not be suitable for concrete, brick, cement board or other backing materials.

2. Select the Correct Diameter

Choose a diameter that provides sufficient clearance for the pipe, cable or fitting. Consider the outside diameter, installation tolerance, edge distance and material thickness.

3. Inspect the Drill Bit

Check the cutting rim, shank, body roundness and inside of the bit. Do not use a cracked, damaged or visibly distorted drill bit.

4. Support the Workpiece

Place loose tiles and slabs on a flat, stable support. Insufficient support can contribute to cracking or breakout when the bit reaches the back surface.

5. Use a Drilling Guide

A rigid drilling guide or template is recommended, particularly for large diameters and smooth glazed surfaces. It prevents the cutting rim from sliding and improves hole positioning.

Recommended Drilling Method

  1. Mark the hole. Confirm the position against fixtures, material edges and possible concealed services.

  2. Secure the workpiece and guide. Neither should move during drilling.

  3. Install the bit correctly. Insert the straight shank fully into the drill chuck and check that it rotates concentrically.

  4. Turn off hammer mode. Use standard rotary mode only.

  5. Start the water supply. Apply clean water before the rim contacts the material and maintain continuous flow.

  6. Begin inside the guide. Allow the diamond rim to establish a complete circular groove.

  7. Use controlled speed. Follow the confirmed speed range for the diameter, material and machine. Do not assume that one speed is suitable for every size.

  8. Apply moderate pressure. Let the diamond rim grind the material. Excessive force increases heat and mechanical stress.

  9. Maintain alignment and cooling. Keep the drill perpendicular, avoid side pressure and ensure slurry can leave the cut.

  10. Reduce pressure before breakthrough. This helps limit breakout on the exit side.

  11. Clean the bit. Disconnect the machine, remove the core plug and flush away slurry after drilling.

Never strike or lever against the 0.95 mm cutting rim when removing a trapped core.

Important Note for Installed Tiles

When drilling a tile already installed over concrete, brick, cement board or another substrate, use the wet diamond core bit only for the approved finish material. Once the tile or slab has been penetrated, change to the correct drill bit for the backing material.

Before drilling an installed surface, check for concealed electrical cables, water pipes and structural components.

Common Drilling Mistakes

Running the Bit Without Water

Dry operation creates excessive heat and may rapidly damage a wet-rated diamond rim.

Using Hammer Mode

Impact action can crack ceramic, porcelain and sintered slabs and may damage the core bit.

Applying Excessive Pressure or Speed

Forcing the bit does not necessarily improve drilling speed. It can overload the machine, distort the thin rim and damage the workpiece.

Allowing the Drill to Tilt

Side loading is particularly harmful to a 0.95 mm thin-wall rim. Keep the drill aligned throughout the hole.

Using the Wrong Machine

A straight-shank wet core bit is intended for a drill or drilling machine. Do not fit it to an angle grinder or improvised threaded adapter.

Leaving the Core Inside the Bit

Remove the core plug and clean the inside after every hole. Accumulated material can restrict cooling and make subsequent drilling more difficult.

Safety Recommendations

  • Wear eye protection, hearing protection and suitable gloves.

  • Use equipment approved for the working environment.

  • Keep electrical connections away from water.

  • Use suitable GFCI or RCD protection when required.

  • Disconnect the machine before installing, inspecting or cleaning the bit.
