Diamond drill bits are made by attaching industrial diamond particles to a metal drilling body in a way that allows those particles to grind hard materials effectively. The exact manufacturing process depends on the type of bit being produced, because different drilling applications require different levels of speed, durability, heat resistance, and diamond retention.

Diamonds are used in drill bits because they are extremely hard and highly wear-resistant, which makes them effective for working on hard, brittle, and abrasive materials. Materials such as glass, tile, porcelain, stone, and certain composites are difficult to drill cleanly with ordinary cutting tools.

Tile and porcelain can be drilled cleanly with a diamond drill bit, but the drilling method has to match the material. Ceramic tile, porcelain tile, and similar hard brittle surfaces do not respond well to aggressive pressure, unstable starting, or excessive heat.

A diamond drill bit that starts cutting slowly is not always worn out. In many cases, the problem is not total diamond loss, but glazing, clogging, or poor maintenance. Dust, slurry, heat, and improper drilling conditions can cover the exposed diamonds and reduce cutting efficiency long before the bit is actually finished.

Diamond drill bit prices can vary widely. Some bits are relatively inexpensive and suitable for light-duty drilling, while others cost significantly more because they are built for harder materials, longer service life, larger hole sizes, or repeated professional use.

Diamond drill bits do not have a single fixed lifespan. Some bits can produce many clean holes with stable performance, while others lose cutting efficiency much sooner. The difference usually comes down to bit quality, bond type, drilling material, operating speed, cooling, and drilling technique.
